About

Kelly O'Connor

Horses have been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember. What began as a childhood passion has grown into a lifelong career built around developing horses, competing at the highest level, and, above all, enjoying the unique partnership between horse and rider.

My Story

My journey began on ponies before progressing through the ranks to represent South Africa at Spruce Meadows as a Child Rider. My passion for the sport then took me to Ireland, where I changed my sporting nationality and proudly represented Ireland in Junior and Young Rider Nations Cup and European Championship competitions. Those years gave me invaluable experience, teaching me not only the finer details of international competition but also the art of producing young horses and recognising exceptional talent.

After the passing of my father, I returned home to South Africa, where I continued pursuing the sport I love. Alongside some truly remarkable horses, I have been fortunate enough to win two South African Show Jumping Championships, the prestigious South African Derby, and the FEI World Cup Series—earning qualification to compete on the international stage. While that opportunity ultimately wasn't the path I chose to follow, qualifying remains one of the achievements I am most proud of.

As rewarding as the results have been, they have never been my greatest motivation. My true passion lies in the horses themselves. I find the greatest fulfilment in producing young horses, helping them reach their potential, and matching talented horses with riders who will enjoy and succeed with them. Every horse has its own story, and being part of that journey is what continues to inspire me every day.

For me, success has never been measured solely by ribbons or titles, but by the relationships built along the way and the privilege of working with these extraordinary animals.

Where Our Horses Come From

A good horse is a good horse, wherever it comes from. Ours come from three places: the horses we breed, young horses we buy in to produce and resell, and horses owners bring to us to sell on their behalf. Whatever the source, we don't sell just anything — every horse goes through the same process and is only offered once it carries our stamp, with full transparency on vetting.

Producing Social Athletes

We believe horses are social athletes, not machines. Correct training, physiotherapy and quality food from a young age are combined with real turnout, paddock time and hacking out — letting a horse just be a horse. It is how we keep them sound, happy and genuinely rideable, and it is the difference you feel when you sit on an O'Connor horse.

The Yard

O'Connor Horses operates from an established stable yard that also offers livery services. The facilities support careful, consistent production of every horse in our string.
